Our Story

From curiosity to community.

There was a time when I tried very hard to fit into rooms that were never meant for me. Corporate offices, structured paths, predictable routines. I moved through them the way many of us do, convincing myself that stability meant alignment. But the truth was simpler. I felt most alive elsewhere. In unfamiliar streets. In conversations with strangers. In the quiet observation of places that had stories to tell.

So I left. Not dramatically. Not recklessly. Just honestly.

Travel, for me, was never about collecting destinations. It was about paying attention. The way a city sounds before it fully wakes up. The rhythm of markets. The pride in an artisan's voice when they speak about their craft. Even if I returned to the same place for the hundredth time, there was always something new to notice.

That curiosity became my compass.

Over the years, I worked as a tour leader with one of the world's largest travel DMCs. I created content for travel brands. I learned how itineraries are structured, how logistics are handled, how trips move. But more importantly, I learned what makes a journey unforgettable, and what makes it forgettable.

And somewhere between leading groups and wandering solo, a question stayed with me:

"What if travel felt less commercial and more conscious? Less rushed and more relational? Less about highlights—and more about connection?"

The question that started it all

That question became Chalo Folks.

Chalo Folks began as a personal way of sharing India. Not the postcard version. Not the checklist version. But the layered, living, breathing version. The one where culture isn't performed, it's experienced. Where heritage stays aren't aesthetic, they're meaningful. Where guides are local voices. Where artisans matter. Where sustainability isn't a marketing angle but a responsibility.

What started as "my way of travelling" slowly became something bigger.

Because every trip brought together people who felt the same pull. Travellers who didn't want to just see India, but understand it. Who respected diversity. Who valued culture over convenience. Who were open to unfamiliar food, unfamiliar customs, unfamiliar perspectives. Who laughed easily and listened deeply.

And so the "I" naturally became "we."

Today, Chalo Folks is more than a travel company.

It is a philosophy.

We travel in small groups so conversations can happen.

We hire local guides so stories are told authentically.

We choose heritage and family-run properties over anonymous chains.

We support women-led initiatives and community businesses.

We avoid experiences that exploit wildlife or culture.

We move intentionally.

But we also dance at festivals.
We celebrate Holi in full colour.
We stay up too late over dinner conversations.
We get lost sometimes, and find something better.

There is structure. There is safety. There is deep planning.
But there is also space.

Space to observe.

Space to connect.

Space to feel.

Chalo Folks is becoming a community-led travel collective, made up of people who believe that travel can be joyful and responsible at the same time. That you can explore the world without consuming it. That you can have fun without causing harm. That you can leave with stories instead of souvenirs.

If you’re here, you probably feel that too.

You’re not looking for another vacation.
You’re looking for perspective.
For connection.
For experiences that stay with you long after the suitcase is unpacked.

And if that’s the case,
we can’t wait to travel with you.

From day one she made me feel comfortable as part of the group. By the end it quickly felt as if I was travelling with a friend. Professional, well-organised and so knowledgeable.

Common Questions

Chalo Folks is a small studio of a travel company offering curated small-group journeys across India. Every trip is designed and personally hosted by Anna. Think of us as your bridge between solo backpacking and rigid tours.
Three things: small groups, local guides, and Anna in person. Trips are capped at 12 travellers, you only ever travel with born-and-raised local guides, and Anna designs and hosts every departure herself.
Maximum 12 travellers, with an average of 8. Small enough for real conversations and intimate experiences; big enough that you'll have a few like-minded folks to explore with.
Absolutely — over 60% of our travellers come solo, and many specifically call this out in their reviews. We vet every accommodation and partner, provide 24/7 on-trip support, and Anna's there with you the whole way. The shared-room option means no single supplement.
Anna personally checks every restaurant in advance. Whether you're vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher, halal or have allergies, just tell us at booking and she'll plan around it. Multiple travellers have called this out as a trip highlight.
Moderate — most days involve some walking through old-city lanes and historic forts (typically 4–5 km), with uneven steps in places. We rarely do anything strenuous. If you have specific mobility concerns, schedule a quick call with Anna.
Hand-picked accommodation, all internal transport, daily breakfast, several meals with local hosts, every guided experience on the itinerary, and 24/7 on-trip support. International flights and visas are not included — but we'll send you a full guide.
Once you book, you get access to a dashboard where you fill in passport, visa, insurance and dietary details. We send a welcome pack with a packing list, visa guidance, meeting points and arrival info. Anna's available by email or call any time before the trip.
See our Refund Policy for the full breakdown — short version: free cancellation up to 60 days before departure (full deposit refund), partial refunds 30–60 days out, no refund inside 30 days. We strongly recommend travel insurance to cover everything else.
Book your flights and visa (we send a guide), fill in your pre-trip details on the dashboard, pack according to our list, and join the group chat once it opens about 2 weeks before departure.
