Ask ten travel sites when to visit India's Golden Triangle and you'll get the same answer: October to March. It's correct — but it's not the whole story. The "best" month depends on what you're optimising for: weather, festivals, crowds or price.

Here's an honest, month-by-month guide to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, so you can match the season to the trip you actually want.

In a hurry? For reliably pleasant weather, aim for November to February. For festivals, target Diwali (Oct/Nov) or Holi (March). For lower prices and thinner crowds, consider the shoulder and monsoon months.

The Short Version

  • Best weather: November to February (cool, dry, 15–25°C days).
  • Best for festivals: October–November for Diwali, March for Holi.
  • Best for fewer crowds and lower prices: April to June and the monsoon (July–September).

October to March — The Peak Season Sweet Spot

This is high season for a reason. Days are pleasant, evenings are crisp, and the light on the Taj Mahal at sunrise is at its softest. The trade-off is that you're travelling with everyone else, so book two to three months ahead — especially around Christmas and New Year.

November — Diwali and Cool Mornings

November might be our favourite. The post-monsoon air is clean, mornings carry a gentle mist, and if your timing lines up with Diwali, the cities glow with lamps and fireworks. That's exactly why we run our 11-day Diwali & Yoga journey in November — the festival of lights across the triangle, then calm on the Ganges in Rishikesh.

December to February — Crisp and Clear

The coolest, driest stretch. Pack layers: Jaipur and Delhi mornings can dip near 5–8°C, warming to a comfortable 20–24°C by afternoon. Visibility is excellent, which makes it the best window for photography. Late December can also bring morning fog around Delhi that occasionally delays flights and trains — build in a buffer.

March — Spring and Holi

Days warm up but mornings stay pleasant, and the Holi festival of colour brings the cities alive in mid-March. A superb shoulder-season choice if you want energy without peak-season crowds.

April to June — Hot but Quiet

Temperatures climb past 40°C, so this isn't for everyone. But the upside is real:

  • Hotels are noticeably cheaper.
  • Monuments are far less crowded.
  • The early-morning starts you want anyway in the heat reward you with near-empty sights.

If you travel in these months, plan everything for the morning and keep afternoons for shade, pools and air-conditioning.

July to September — The Monsoon

Short, heavy bursts of rain, a greener landscape, the lowest prices of the year, and very few tourists. If you don't mind the occasional downpour, the monsoon has a quiet, atmospheric beauty. Our summer departures — like the 8-day Taj & Tales tour in July and Royal Rajasthan in August — are built around early starts and air-conditioned comfort to sidestep the heat.

Quick Month-by-Month Snapshot

  • Jan–Feb: Cool, dry, clear. Peak season. Pack warm layers.
  • March: Warming, Holi, lively. Great shoulder month.
  • Apr–Jun: Hot (40°C+). Cheap and quiet; mornings only.
  • Jul–Sep: Monsoon. Green, cheapest, fewest tourists.
  • Oct–Nov: Crisp, clean air, Diwali. Our favourite window.
  • Dec: Cold mornings, possible fog; festive and beautiful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit the Golden Triangle?

For the most comfortable weather, February or November are hard to beat — dry, clear and pleasantly cool. November also coincides with Diwali in many years, adding the festival of lights to the trip.

Is the Golden Triangle too hot in summer?

April to June regularly exceeds 40°C, so midday sightseeing is tough. It's still doable on a budget if you start early, rest in the afternoon heat, and choose air-conditioned transport and stays.

Can you visit the Golden Triangle during the monsoon?

Yes. July to September brings short, heavy showers rather than all-day rain, plus a lush landscape, the lowest prices and the thinnest crowds. Pack a light rain jacket and keep your plans flexible.

When is Diwali, and is it a good time to visit?

Diwali falls in October or November (the date shifts each year with the lunar calendar). It's a beautiful, atmospheric time to visit — cities are lit with lamps and fireworks — though it's busy, so book early. Our Diwali & Yoga journey is timed around it.

How far in advance should I book for peak season?

For November to February dates, book two to three months ahead. Hotels and small-group departures both fill up fastest around the December holidays.
