Every December, half of North India seems to decide on Manali at the same moment. The result is familiar: hours of traffic on the way to Solang, hotel rates that triple over Christmas, and a snow point that feels like a mall car park. Manali is lovely. It just isn't lovely in the last week of December.

These are ten offbeat places to visit in December in India that are at their best this month, reachable from Delhi in a night's travel or a short flight, and still quiet enough to feel like yours.

Quick answer: The best offbeat places to visit in December in India are Jibhi, Shangarh and Bir in Himachal for cold, clear mountain days and a chance of snow; Chopta for a snow trek; Jaisalmer, Kutch and Orchha for desert and heritage in perfect weather; Hampi and Gokarna in the south; and Meghalaya for clear rivers and root bridges.

Himachal, without the Manali traffic

1. Jibhi

Jibhi is a timber-and-stone village in the Banjar valley, a turn off the Manali highway that most traffic never takes. In December the stream through the village runs cold and clear, the homestays light their stoves, and after mid-December there's a good chance of snow.

One thing to plan around: snow usually closes Jalori Pass, and with it the hike to Raghupur Fort, from around mid-December to March. Go in early December for the fort and the views, or late December for snow in the village. Our 3-day Jibhi, Jalori Pass and Shangarh itinerary has the details.

2. Shangarh

A couple of hours from Jibhi in the Sainj valley, Shangarh is a village around a huge flat meadow ringed by deodars. In December the grass is silver with frost in the mornings, the sky is a hard blue, and you can have the meadow almost to yourself. Stays are simple homestays; bring warm layers and your patience for a slow day.

3. Bir

Bir does well in December. The skies are clear, the cafés are quiet, and prices are lower than in the October rush. Paragliding still runs on clear days, though mornings can be foggy in the valley, so flights often start mid-morning. Pair it with a night by the river in Barot for the full trip; our Bir and Barot itinerary shows how.

Snow, if that's what you're after

4. Chopta

Chopta, in the Garhwal Himalaya, is a meadow camp with a 3.5 km trail up to Tungnath, one of the highest Shiva temples in the world, and on to the Chandrashila summit. In December the trail is usually under snow. The temple itself is closed for winter, but the walk and the views of the high peaks at sunrise are the reason to go. Go with a local guide and check the road from Ukhimath before leaving, as fresh snow can close it.

The desert and the heritage towns, in their best month

5. Jaisalmer

December is Jaisalmer's sweet spot: warm, golden days and cold desert nights. Skip the strip of loud camps at Sam and stay further out at Khuri or a smaller camp among the dunes, where the stars are the main entertainment. In town, the fort is still lived in, with families, shops and temples inside the walls. Our Jaisalmer travel guide covers what to see.

6. Kutch

The White Rann, a salt desert that stretches to the horizon, is at its most striking from December to February, especially on a full-moon night. The Rann Utsav tent city usually runs through the season if you want comfort; for something quieter, stay in a village near Hodka. Add Dholavira, a Harappan city and UNESCO World Heritage Site on an island in the Rann.

7. Orchha

Orchha is a small town of Bundela palaces, temples and riverside cenotaphs on the Betwa river, and it's one of the easiest offbeat trips from Delhi: a four-and-a-half-hour train to Jhansi and a short drive. December days are made for wandering the Jahangir Mahal and sitting by the river at sunset.

The south, when it finally cools down

8. Hampi

The boulder-strewn ruins of the Vijayanagara empire are too hot for much of the year; December is when they become a pleasure. Cross the river to Anegundi for the quieter side, with village stays, rice fields and sunsets from the hilltops. Our Hampi travel guide has more.

9. Gokarna

If you want a beach over Christmas and New Year without Goa's crowds, Gokarna is the answer. It's a temple town with a string of beaches, Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise, linked by coastal trails. Stays range from simple beach huts to a few smarter resorts.

The Northeast, at its clearest

10. Meghalaya

December is dry and cool in Meghalaya. The Umngot river at Dawki and Shnongpdeng is at its clearest this time of year, the walk down to the living root bridges near Sohra is less slippery than in the rains, and Shillong is lit up for Christmas.

Where can I see snow in December in India without the crowds?

Jibhi and Shangarh for the Himachal village experience, Bir for cafés and paragliding, and Chopta for snow. All three are quieter than Manali in December and similar in travel time from Delhi.
